Humpty Dumpty Snack Foods Centrifuge
US Centrifuge Systems saves snack manufacturer $575,000 per year and creates additional revenue of $105,000.
Before US Centrifuge Systems
Humpty Dumpty produces snack foods, including potato chips. The company needed to recover starch from the waster used at its snack food slicers. The Humpty Dumpty plant collected all wastewater streams to an equalizing pit. The mixed effluent was recycled across a rotating drum screen to a DAF hydracyclone combination tank and back to the equalizing pit. The clarified underflow water from the DAF tank discharged to the city.
Beyond the Centrifuge
US Centrifuge Systems expanded its research and development in 1999 with a successful waste-to-energy system that can now convert up 8 tons of waste within one hour of operation into renewable energy. Sister company Organic Power Solutions was established, and now, high-value co-products are created and used in the production of in-house renewable energy or sold to third-party utility companies. Typically, the effluent quality was measured at 2,000 to 2,500 ppm BOD and 2,000 to 2,5000 ppm TSS. Humpty Dumpty needed to significantly reduce BOD by 50 to 60 percent (around 1,000 ppm) and TSS to below 500 ppm. Humpty Dumpty needed to save money and decided to create a new plant with state-of-the-art decanter centrifuge systems.
Solutions
US Centrifuge Systems designed a complete solution for Humpty Dumpty's needs. The new plant would utilize a CQ4 decanter centrifuge to recover starch from the water used at the slicers. A macerator and CQ5 decanter centrifuge were installed to clarify the water discharged directly from the equalizing pit to the city.
Results
Starch Recovery
Now at Humpty Dumpty, feed to the CQ4 is 80 gpm at 0.65 percent starch. Starch recovery is greater than 98 percent in one pass, and the effluence has less than 130 ppm TSS. The starch cake is 60 percent dry solids and is sold directly as a valuable byproduct for use as cattle feed.
Effluent
The inline macerator protects the CQ5 from foreign metal or hard objects and converts out of spec potato or product into added TSS in the feed to the decanter. The system runs at 130 gpm and reduces TSS to around 550 ppm. When the two centrate streams are mixed together, the effluent to the city is around 1,000 ppm BOD and 350 to 400 ppm TSS.
